Saturday January 17th Betting Action

I'd like to start off by apologizing for not posting my free plays more regularly here at D Rock Sports as with site maintenance in mid-December, the holidays, and the busy Bowl season I had a hard time finding time to post write ups here and rank plays that were still good but not good enough to make my premium card. But now that the hectic period is over with and we are only two months away from March Madness, you'll be seeing a lot more of my posts here at D Rock. I'm back with a free NHL pick tonight: All lines taken from Pinnacle Sports with bet amounts ‘to win’ on favorites and flat on underdogs Play of the Day in Bold Free Play Records NCAAF YTD: 24-24 ATS (-$393) NFL YTD: 11-17 ATS (-$1926) NHL YTD: 14-15 (+$274) NBA YTD: 9-13 (-$998) NCAAB: 2-1-1 (+$83) NHL Free Play Anaheim/L.A Over 5.5 +118 ($300 to win $354) The Ducks and Kings have met twice already this year with each team winning once at home in OT or the shootout. We finished with scores of 6-5 and 3-2 in those respective contests, but I believe tonight's game resembles that 6-5 meeting rather than the latter. For one, L.A has been struggling to keep the puck out of their net these days as they've allowed 5, 0, 5, 4, and 7 goals in their past five games. That shutout came against a hapless Leafs team that can't seemingly score on anyone at the moment, so I don't put much weight into that result. Secondly, the Ducks have won five of their last six games overall by scoring 4+ goals in each of those five wins [...]

How I’m Attacking Conference Championship Weekend

Championship Weekend in the NFL is always a great Sunday of action as we've got familiar teams battling out with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line. Players can make names for themselves during this game and subsequently get two weeks to talk about it after they win, but with two Conference Championship games this year that are rematches from the regular season there is plenty to talk about this week: Lines; Green Bay (+7.5) vs. Seattle (-7.5); Total set at 46.5 Indianapolis (+6.5) vs. New England (-6.5); Total set at 53.5 As most of you may know, I've always been a totals guy to the core and that won't change this weekend. I like both of these numbers where they sit right now and have made premium plays on both of them. As far as the sides go, both underdogs are the ones with revenge here after the Packers and Colts lost by double digits earlier this year to their respective opponents and I would not be shocked to see at least one of them win outright. However, to me this weekend has all the feel of Seattle and New England moving on so we can get two weeks of talk about how Seattle will be the "greatest defense ever" if they take down Manning and Brady in consecutive Super Bowls. Talking heads in the media love their storylines and there isn't one much bigger than that in my opinion. If I had to make wagers on these spreads, I'd lay the chalk with Seattle even at 7.5 because I think they blitz Rodgers and his sore calf early and often to not let him get it loose and come back strong in [...]

College Football Playoff: Ohio State vs. Alabama

Unlike my preview of the Seminoles/Ducks game, I do have a wager on this playoff game before it kicks off. We've got two historic programs meeting up with two head coaches who are very familiar with one another and the stakes couldn't be higher. Current Line at Pinnacle Sports: Ohio State (+9) vs. Alabama (-9); Total set at 58.5 Urban Meyer and Nick Saban are no strangers to one another from Meyer's SEC days when Florida and Alabama often met in the SEC Championship game with the winner going on to win it all. Although the program and conference may be different for Meyer, the talented roster he has remains the same. He is starting a QB who was 3rd on the depth chart coming into the year and making his second career CFB start (Cardale Jones) which is a bit concerning, but the way Jones played in dominating Wisconsin in the Big 10 title game is a good sign for Buckeyes fans. Yet, the one advantage Saban and Alabama have here that Wisconsin did not (aside from the month to prepare) is they've actually got game film on Jones and have a better idea of what to expect. Ohio State ran the ball very well in that 59-0 win and Meyer used that rushing success to open up the passing game for Jones. The problem this time around for Ohio State is that 'Bama knows how to stop the run and will not allow RB Ezekiel Elliot to run all over them and take control of the game. Alabama only allows 88 rushing yards per game and you know Saban and DC Kirby Smart will stack the box to limit the running game and force young Cardale Jones [...]

College Football Playoff: Florida State vs. Oregon

After battling some burnout the past few weeks, the holidays have recharged my batteries and I'll be back to posting regularly here at D Rock Sports. To begin I thought I'd give you my thoughts on the first college football playoff game this year as Florida State looks to prove their doubters wrong again with a win over Oregon. Current Line at Pinnacle Sports: Florida State (+8) vs. Oregon (-8); Total set at 71 The defending National Champions from Florida State have had the whole college football world against them this year as many are waiting for them to lose their first game since 2012. The Seminoles aren't nearly as dominant as they were a year ago, but surviving numerous close games and coming back from double digit halftime deficits this season could actually help them in these playoffs. This team knows how to perform with their backs against the wall and on the biggest stage, and that poise under pressure is a huge plus in a playoff game like this. The problem is, Florida State was just 3-10 ATS this year as bettors routinely got burned by waiting to pounce on the Seminoles to finally turn the corner and blow someone out. That was never the case and now they are listed as underdogs for the first time since the 2011 season. On the other side, Oregon has been blowing everyone out since their loss to Arizona in late-September and come into this one on an 8-0 ATS run. The lofty spreads haven't been a problem for Oregon during that time and their 9-4 ATS record this year as been a nice bankroll boost for their bettors. So who comes out on top? Well first [...]

Tuesday NHL Premium Play

The Cincinnati Bengals came through for all of us last night as they played great on defense (minus two drives) and took control of that game right from the start. As a fan I'm glad they are back in the playoffs but am hoping for at least one playoff win from them as the one-and-dones are getting old hat. It's on to the NHL tonight though for my free premium selections as there are plenty of games on the board before the league takes a few days off for the holiday season. Game: Carolina (+133) vs. New Jersey (-147); Total set at 5 The Hurricanes and Devils are both marred in losing stretches right now and are desperate to head into the break on a winning note. Both teams were shutout in their last game as offense has been a concern for both teams this year, but I don't think that will be the case tonight. First off, because of those shutout losses it's no surprise to see nearly 90% of the action come in on the 'under' tonight. Both teams rank near the bottom of the league in scoring (29th and 27th respectively) and if you were to apply their averages (2.06/game for Carolina, 2.14/game for NJ), this game would stay 'under' the total. However, playing 'overs' after a team gets shutout is a strategy I generally subscribe too, and when both teams are coming off a shutout loss, that strategy becomes even stronger. Carolina is starting backup Anton Khudobin tonight who has yet to win a game this year (0-8-2), but he did look sharp in the shutout loss last time out. Yet this is not a guy you can trust to have [...]
